Whiz
Phone brand PG · Port Gellhorn
Whiz Wireless Communication is the GTA series' budget cell carrier, a BAWSAQ-listed telecom giant infamous in-universe for selling bad service to customers with bad credit. It feuds with rival Tinkle under the slogan 'Whiz is stronger than Tinkle', both names being slang for urinating, in typical Rockstar fashion.
Port Gellhorn minimall storefront
Whiz is visibly present in Grand Theft Auto VI through a store at Crossroad Park Minimall in Port Gellhorn, Leonida. The storefront appears in the game’s second trailer. No trailer timestamp, phone model, service plan, price, or interior has been identified in the available material.
The GTA VI store uses a revised Whiz mark. Earlier branding used italic lettering; the Port Gellhorn version appears to replace it with a plainer typeface. This storefront is the confirmed GTA VI appearance, rather than a carried-over reference to the company’s earlier products or advertising.
Florida retail inspiration
The Crossroad Park Minimall branch appears to draw on a Boost Mobile outlet that operated in a mall at Callaway, Florida, before that mall was demolished. This comparison concerns the Port Gellhorn store location specifically, not a confirmed model for every Whiz outlet.
Whiz itself parodies Verizon most directly. A radio commercial’s line, “Can you see my junk now? Good,” echoes Verizon’s former “Can you hear me now? Good” campaign. Its name, visual identity, colour scheme, and advertising also point toward the former Sprint Corporation: “whiz” and “sprint” can both mean to move quickly. The brand’s yellow liquid-like logo background extends the urination joke shared with Tinkle.
Phones in Liberty City
In Grand Theft Auto IV, Niko Bellic initially carries a Badger handset. During the mission “Photo Shoot,” Playboy X supplies him with a Whiz phone so that he can photograph a snitch. The replacement is presented as more attractive than the Badger and includes a camera, enabling photographs that the earlier phone cannot take.
Whiz had two models identified simply as Cellphone models, alongside a High Speed Phone. In-game radio reporting described the company’s business approach as selling showy phones loaded with unnecessary features, then binding subscribers to costly contracts. Among the named Whiz users are Angus Martin, Billy Grey, Derrick McReary, Gracie Ancelotti, Niko Bellic, Playboy X, Ray Boccino, and Roman Bellic.
Los Santos expansion
By the Los Santos era, Whiz operated public pay phones. In Grand Theft Auto V, its shares were available through BAWSAQ. The company also sponsored racing versions of the Jester and Massacro, appearing on their liveries rather than being identified as either vehicle’s manufacturer.
A 2013 radio advertisement promoted the Whiz Smartphone against iFruit. Its stated pitch was that Whiz had copied the iFruit design outright and improved nine minor points. This is a different product reference from the older Cellphone and High Speed Phone models, while GTA VI has so far shown a retail premises rather than a named handset.
Rivals and product range
Tinkle is Whiz’s principal named competitor in the wireless market, while Badger is another competing phone brand. The Niko Bellic storyline gives a direct comparison between Badger and Whiz: the Whiz device supplied by Playboy X has a camera, whereas Niko’s starting Badger does not.
Weazel News describes Whiz as among the world’s largest telecommunications companies. Its catalogue was said to contain the greatest number of phone models, consisting of the two Cellphone variants and the High Speed Phone. The GTA VI material confirms the Whiz name and updated branding in Port Gellhorn, but does not identify which of those earlier models, if any, are sold there.
