Grassrivers in GTA 6

Ten minutes out of Vice City’s neon and the road gives up. Grassrivers is the GTA 6 map’s wet wilderness — a horizon of sawgrass cut by channels you cross by airboat, not bridge. It’s the region Rockstar describes almost entirely through nature, and that makes it unlike anything else in Leonida.

Overview

What Grassrivers is

Grassrivers is Leonida’s southern wetland belt: broad marshes, sawgrass plains, and rivers that move so slowly the water looks solid. Rockstar’s official framing lists swamps, airboats, alligators and other wildlife, and hunting and fishing — a checklist that positions the region as the game’s nature reserve, danger included.

On the map it acts as connective tissue between very different worlds: the Leonida Keys to the south, the Vice City metro to the east, and the industrial interior around Ambrosia to the north. Whatever crosses Leonida quietly probably crosses through here.

Real-world roots

A river of grass, renamed

The inspiration here isn’t subtle — it’s in the name. The real Everglades have been called the “River of Grass” since Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s 1947 book, and “Grassrivers” is that phrase flipped into a place name. The content matches too: the Everglades are exactly this — a shallow, slow sheet of water moving through sawgrass, navigated by airboat, home to alligators and an entire ecosystem of wading birds and snakes.

If Rockstar follows the reference all the way, expect stilt shacks, ranger stations, and roadside gator-farm Americana — the fan-favorite texture of the real Tamiami Trail. That last part is our extrapolation, not an announcement.

Confirmed

What official material has shown

Across the two trailers (December 2023, May 2025) and Rockstar’s published world material, Grassrivers is confirmed as: sprawling swamp and sawgrass marsh, slow rivers navigated by airboat, alligators and other wildlife, and hunting and fishing as named activities. That is one of the more concrete region descriptions Rockstar has given — it names both the traversal method and two activity systems outright.

Nothing has been said officially about settlements, story missions, or the region’s exact area. For how the wetlands fit into the size question, see our GTA 6 map size analysis.

Atmosphere

What you’ll likely do here

Reading between the official lines: airboats as the signature vehicle, hunting and fishing as repeatable activities, and wildlife that can hurt you. Grassrivers looks like GTA 6’s answer to RDR2’s bayou — a place the game sends you to feel small, wet, and watched. The alligator line in Rockstar’s description suggests fauna is a hazard system, not scenery.

It’s also a natural stage for crime that avoids roads. With the Keys’ smuggling economy next door, swamp channels that bypass every highway checkpoint write their own mission briefs — though, to be clear, no Grassrivers missions have been announced.

Characters

Who’s tied to Grassrivers

Honest answer: nobody, yet. None of the eight officially revealed characters is described as living or working in Grassrivers. The region’s cast — if it has one — is still under wraps, which itself is worth noting: every other corner of the revealed material connects to a face, while the swamp stays anonymous. We’ll update this page the moment Rockstar names names.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is Grassrivers based on in real life?

The Florida Everglades. Even the name is a tell: the real Everglades are famously called the “River of Grass,” and Grassrivers reads as a direct riff on that phrase. Officially, Rockstar describes the region as swamps, sawgrass marshes, and slow rivers.

02 Are there alligators in Grassrivers?

Yes — alligators are part of Rockstar’s official description of the region, alongside other wildlife. How dangerous or interactive they are in-game hasn’t been detailed.

03 Can you drive an airboat in GTA 6?

Airboats are named in the official description of Grassrivers as the way the region’s waterways are navigated, so airboat traversal is effectively confirmed for the wetlands. Specific vehicle mechanics remain unannounced.

04 Is any story content confirmed for Grassrivers?

Not yet. None of the officially revealed characters is described as based in Grassrivers — Rockstar has shown the swamp itself, not its residents. Treat any claim about specific missions here as speculation.

05 Where is Grassrivers on the GTA 6 map?

In the southern interior of Leonida — the wetland belt sitting between the Keys chain to the south and the Vice City metro to the east, in the fan-made map reconstructions. Official material confirms the region, not its exact borders.
