Field notes

Fish in Leonida

Fish are a marine animal species with a presence stretching back to the original Grand Theft Auto III, having since appeared across Vice City, San Andreas, Chinatown Wars, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online, and they are due to appear again in Grand Theft Auto VI. Historically found swimming in schools throughout the series' oceans and other large bodies of water, fish were rendered as simple, non-interactive 2D sprites in the earliest titles before later games upgraded them to 3D models that players could shoot or, in GTA V's enhanced version and GTA Online, control directly. Multiple distinct fish types have populated the series' waters to date, a variety that is expected to continue as part of Grand Theft Auto VI's marine wildlife.

GTA VI Confirmation

Fish are confirmed to return in Grand Theft Auto VI. No trailer timestamp, screenshot, promotional image, named region, species identification, or interaction detail has been provided for their GTA VI appearance.

The available information does not identify any real-world fish species as the basis for the GTA VI animals. It also does not establish whether the game will use particular variants, schools, or player-controlled forms carried over from earlier titles.

Earlier Appearances and Behavior

Grand Theft Auto III showed dead fish during the mission “Gone Fishing.” The Ballad of Gay Tony placed ornamental fish in Yusuf Amir’s penthouse, while Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars could generate severed fish heads in green dumpsters.

In Grand Theft Auto V, fish appear across every version of the game. The enhanced edition allows a Peyote Plant to turn the player into one fish type; the other fish types remain unavailable as playable animals. GTA Online limits fish to the Pacific in its enhanced edition. Peyote Plants arrived there during the continuing Diamond Casino & Resort update, with one possible transformation being a fish.

San Andreas depicted fish travelling together through major bodies of water. In the original releases, their appearance was seemingly flat sprite artwork and they did not respond to the player. Later 3D fish models changed that treatment, including the ability to shoot them in GTA V.
