Grassrivers

The Grassrivers is a natural region of flooded grasslands in southern Leonida, due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI, currently known to extend through Vice-Dale County. Official marketing bills the wetlands as the untamed 'jewel of Leonida's crown', promising alligators, mangroves, and stranger dangers beneath the surface, in keeping with the state's Florida-inspired geography.
Trailer scenes and location
Grand Theft Auto VI’s first trailer shows the Grassrivers in back-to-back shots. At 0:19, an airboat travels through the wetlands; at 0:20, a large flock of flamingos appears among several alligators. The region is known to cross Mariana County as well as Vice-Dale County.
A September 2022 leak had already named the area on an interpretive display called “Energy in the Grassrivers,” describing its ecosystem. That leak predates the trailer footage, while the trailer provides the confirmed official view of the region.
Everglades inspiration
The Grassrivers draws on Florida’s Everglades. Its name likely alludes to Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s 1947 book, The Everglades: River of Grass, which helped popularize that description of the real wetland landscape.
Earlier Grand Theft Auto links
Before GTA VI’s reveal, Grassrivers, Vice City, and Vice Beach were presented as Florida locations, retaining the real state name. Grand Theft Auto IV included indirect references through a Vice City holiday advertisement on Leftover-vacations.com and a Craplist.net post by a visitor who had taken a crocodile from the city’s wetland boundary to Liberty City.
The Everglades had also been planned for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in the 3D Universe. Unused PlayStation 2 assets, including a distant-detail texture for sawgrass prairie, indicate that the intended area would have stood west of Escobar International Airport.
