Dinka

Vehicle manufacturer ST · Statewide

Dinka is the series' Japanese manufacturer of compact, sports, and family cars along with dirt bikes, sport bikes, and even the Marquis sailing yacht, its name, like Weeny's, connoting smallness. Primarily modeled on Honda, the marque is expected to return in Grand Theft Auto VI.

Honda and Toyota Influences

Dinka’s main real-world model is Honda. Its emblem recalls the form of Honda’s H badge, although Dinka uses four or six bracket-like marks rather than a single letterform.

The Jester Classic and Jester RR are exceptions to that Honda basis: their designs instead take after Toyota vehicles. No particular Toyota models are identified for either car.

Name Origins and Language

The name also alludes to “dink,” an ethnic slur directed particularly at Asian people, including Vietnamese people. Dinka is additionally the name of a South Sudanese ethnic group.

Another possible reference is Dinky Toys, the British die-cast vehicle maker. “Dinky” later became a description for a small, cheaply made car, matching perceptions of Japanese export economy cars in North America during the 1970s before Japanese manufacturers moved further upmarket.

As a Japanese-language name, Dinka is unusual because native Japanese vocabulary does not use the syllable “di.” The Nihon-shiki spelling ヂ represents a sound pronounced “ji,” and it is generally limited to rendaku sound changes. Japanese companies do, however, often adopt Western-style brand names; Lexus is an example, despite Japanese lacking an L sound.
